I don't mind. I think he's better than Luxurious and Charizard. He's both cool and kind of goofy, which I feel is the best of both worlds and encapsulates pokemon n perfectly.

If you wanted to hear it straight from the horses' mouth, you could've checked out the conference where Pac-Man was revealed. During that conference an attendee asked Sakurai how Greninja came to be added to the Game. He responded that they had to discuss within their team WHO to add into the game. This was because Gen VI hadn't been released, so GF didn't know who would stick to the audience. So they gave the Smash team a plethora of Gen VI mons and told them to add whoever they liked best. Greninja was the one they liked the most for the game. Sakurai himself even had to conceptualize him, which he did in a single night.

This too. Greninja was voted Best Gen VI pokemon on both Dorkly and IGN polls with +3 Million votes, Landed on 27th and 39th "Best of all time" list respectively and was declared the "New Charizard". And this all happened before he even had his Smash Reveal.
Greninja was an instant hit. It's just that later aparitions made him a Superstar. Like going from Is This It? in terms of an album that hit it big amongst the alternative (or in this case the Pokefag) crowd, to full blown Dark Side of the Moon status, as in, pretty much a household name.

Greninja isn't my favorite Pokemon or anything like that, but it's a good design and I can see the appeal. I'm a grassfag through and through, but it's nice that a not-fire type starter is finally getting recognition after Charizard set the precedent for grass and water starters to not get shit.
More importantly, Lucario placed 15th, behind Pokemon like Genesect and Sylveon. I really hope this means GF finally drops the damn thing.My favorite Pokemon, Mawile, placed 84th/720 so I'm really content with this poll overall.

And i believe it's the first water type to be the clear showrunner. It took nearly 20 years, but they finally made a pokemon that can rival Charizard. Considering the fact that we're no longer within the full-blown PokeMania of the 90's, i'm surprised ANY pokemon at all has gotten this popular.
I'm pretty sure that if Pokemon were as big now as it was back then Greninja would be as popular, if not even more popular than Charizard. Maybe they'd even be rivals in the eyes of people?
