I just played through BW2. Aside from the very beginning and the very end, you almost never encounter your rival.
Regarding Platinum, it would be tied for my favorite in the series if it wasn't hampered by technical issues and poor design choices (mainly issues with the UI and map design). I'd compare it to Ocarina of Time in the sense that it hasn't aged well at all, causing it to play poorly in comparison to later games.

Same here. Playing Platinum for the first time a few months ago made me appreciate Sinnoh more and now Mt. Coronet is one of my favorite locations in general (it also helped that now I live close to a mountain chain and I'm more used to mountainous areas).
A really good experience that helped relieve the sour taste my only previous Gen 4 playthrough (Diamond) had left back in 2009.

I've always been a gen 2 guy, but platinum was a SOLID entry into the series.

X/Y and R/S/E are definitely runner-up for aesthetics. for whatever reason, after Platinum, gen 5 went in a direction where dark colors were everywhere, and all the pixelation as a result of trying to do 3D on the regular DS was pretty ugly.
i feel like people only have such a high opinion of platinum cause it fixed all the obvious problems that diamond and pearl had, so going from shit to decent felt like a breath of fresh air.

because it's repetitive and tedious facing the same trainer over and over, often with only a couple levels' difference. then there's the fact that they hound you and talk to you more than any other trainer in the game, and the fact that rivals are supposed to be your measurement for how you're progressing. throwing the exact same encounter at you over and over makes the world feel smaller, and doesn't give you an indicator that you're getting better.

I never cared much for the villains or the rival in Platinum (which I luckily played before DP). What I really appreciated was the landscape and look of the game. Shit was more varied than before, landscape and pallette - and, yes, the snow is a big part of that. I enjoyed that it was a long, arduous journey across the rural countryside. Pokemon, for me, has always been about the journey, and I liked the idea of just fucking off into the wilderness with your 'Mons, battling the wilderness, as well as trainers, from one end of the region to the other.
I had enough of routes that were just built around the idea of walking along a path lined with trainers or walking through grass patches to dodge trainers. Water routes are another story.
The pace is slow, but after RSE starting every battle with a sprite crawling across the screen at a snail's pace, it didn't feel slow at all (and again, I dodged shit like DP's surf speed). I also prefer an atmospheric slow burn in TVs and movies, too.
Also, deity Pokemon were neat, but Arceus was underwhelming.
They could lay off the bass guitar in the soundtrack though.
