You can get Larvitar in the Game Corner in Crystal at least. That's how I got mine early.
You can also get it early on via the Safari Zone after you do the warden's test stuff in HGSS.

Definitely. I don't even run a team like that most of the time but it's the one that pleases my OCD the most, and I try to build a team like that on my first playthrough. However, remember that you can use one Mon to fill multiple roles in the team, for example Lanturn for both Water and Electric. Now you have a free teamslot to use whatever you want.

Sure it's overused as hell but it's still the best Electric-type in the game and found very early so it's a really good pick no matter what. There's a reason why it's so common.

I hope I'm lucky with the Magnemites then. Or has HGSS changed where you can get one without fuss? In any case, Magneton or Ampharos usually occupies this slot as Electric attacker.

I had fun with Vileplume, but Grass anything is not a regular preference. I usually split Water HMs between two Water units, last Silver run I tacked Poliwrath into the slot.

Eh, I could buy one, I guess. Not my preferred way of getting one, though. Final slot is usually occupied by an Sp.ATK 'mon, typically Fire, Psychic, or Ice.
Top two slots, though, guilty as charged.
