I never felt bad for N when I first played the game, right up until the point whereyou beat him in the castle and his father goes off on him. If you hadn't been there, Ghetsis would have had his Pokemon tear N's party apart and then kill him afterward. N pretty much had his whole world crushed in a new seconds, and now has to live with the fact the person he loved and admired was going to kill him.

He was raised in a very specific way so ghetsis could manipulate him, and it worked, except it made N open minded and meeting you causes him to see things better with your encounters
