I actually like Heatran a lot. It's very "Pokemon", if you get me. It's definitely a monster, you know? That isn't an animal with an element strapped to it. It's a full-fledged monster. I just appreciate that quality. There aren't that many Pokemon like that.

Heatran is without a doubt the ugliest Pokemon. And I don't mean ugly in a way that diminishes other intentionally ugly Pokemon like Weezing, I mean ugly in that its design is a complete mess. Heatran is amazing. The grey spots make sense if you read his dex entry (inb4 mewtist), he has a mask of steel that looks like a skull when opened and red hateful eyes. He's genuinely like something you would encounter in a Monster Hunter game and hunt down to extinction just to get that one last gem needed for your perfect armor set.
Him being amazing in competitive is only a cherry on top desu. The fact that he managed to stay relevant in all competitive metas without any significant changes is a true testament of his power.

I know what the gray spots are. I know what its concept is. I'm saying that the design itself is terrible. There are many ways they could have taken the idea of "volcano monster with a body made out of molten slag", and Heatran is quite possibly the absolute worst direction they could have gone in. It's eyes look silly as fuck and the yellow spots look like chunks of corn in a pile of shit. The mouth is literally the only good/clever part of its design, and that is not enough to save it.

Heatran was based on fire salamander (taken very literally), the yellow spots are one of their most renowned features. I think they go very well with it's deep crimson body.

I should also add that it's literally the only Sinnoh legendary done right. It's not some Digimon tier god of whatever capable of destroying the entire planet by itself, just a really rare monster that you happen to come across your journey. Unlike them it's not handed to you by some chucklefuck in the Pokemon Center either, you have to trek through the entire Stark Mountain which is a great expansive area with lots of powerful trainers and wild Pokemon. The small Team Galactic epilogue at the end of Platinum was a great touch too. So really, I don't get the hate this Pokemon gets on /vp/ sometimes. Maybe it's just some elaborate meme I don't know about.
