He was a "meh" gym leader anyways, and replacing Steven, a fairly good champ both in story and in battle, with him felt like a gut punch at the end of Emerald. It doesn't help that he is identical to the 8th gym leader that took over. Diantha is a crappy champ, but Wallace doesn't even deserve to wear the title.
