There is a noticeable aesthetic shift after gen 4. The pokemon designs were more or less consistent with obviously mild changes over time. Gen 5 was an abrupt change in style which was disappointing after gen 4. Gen 6 and 7 it just became accepted, gen 5 was a disappointment.
