What went wrong?
The guy had limited options and nothing extravagant at all
The girl has almost nothing but extravagant and what was practical and modest was extremely limited
No callback outfits or anything really weird other than the Slurpuff dress and Pangoro hat

Pretty much this. It was a great feature but had so many missed opportunities and was very underdone.
I'm sure making so many outfits takes work and that this cuts into modeling npcs and pokemon, so I'm not for it. All these years the protagonists they've designed have been perfectly fine.
GameFreak thought guys worse the same 2 outfits in different colors and gave girls fancy outfits that probably wouldn't make sense to wear when running around being a trainer. Hoping SM will be more practical both variety and clothing wise. Also hoping for more Pokemon themed clothing and callback outfits since the XY options sucked.

Well, with SM's using full models, I'm sure it'll be easier for them so they don't have to make chibi versions of every piece of clothing.

Nothing?

Dudes got the shaft.
Maybe as a dude, I just don't get women's fashion, but I couldn't quite put my finger on the outfit combos between "stripper", "idol", and Default. Half the game I ran around as default with a marshmallow hat, the second half I ran around in a booty-skirt a shirt tied with a bow. I don't know if actual clothing is in there.
