Besides nuzlocke, what are some ways you make modern pokemon games somewhat challenging?

>set mode (goes without saying)
>EXP share off (have to actually train your pokemon individually instead of letting them all take a backseat)
>premier balls only (lowest catch rate and expensive, make every catch count)
>no battling wild pokemon unless you mean to catch it (less exp, makes it so your team isn't overleved as faurk)

I've been doing this in X/Y and so far it's been pretty challenging, but not hard enough to where I have to grind.

This image has bothered me ever since I finished SBR, shouldn't Johnny be holding a pepe that looks like Gyro? The arc literally ends with that "Let's go home, Gyro" -moment.

I just don't like the idea of nuzlock. Having pokemon die and then having to release them seems really dumb.

well, tons of self-imposed challenge sets exists. monotype, babymon team (only base evos/only mons with a BST < X (I think it's like under 500)).

Recently tried Y with a bug team. Was pretty difficult considering they're one of the shittiest type.

I'll fill a box up with mystery eggs and use them for the duration of the game.

You never know what you're going to get so you have to learn strats for every random shitmon.

I've been doing this since HGSS and it's loads more fun than just using what they give you along the road.

No grinding on wild Pokemon. Only fight obligatory trainers.

It's simple, you play any of the stadium games PBR was especially fun for this

this doesnt make the game more difficult at all

I suggest doing a monotype challenge. If you don't know what type to choose just start with the one you hate the most or pick randomly. It helps get you out of your comfort zone and (hopefully) find some new mons you overlooked before.

Also combine some of the things you say like EXP share off, set mode, etc for extra difficulty.

I use a randomizer on FireRed, it is quite fun, trying to discover from zero what type is each pokemon, and trying to not overlevel.

I had a Beedrill that was Steel/Fire with Levitate. I was Meteor Mashing/Overheat my way through until a random Trainer beat me with a Wonder Guard Kyogre that I still don't know what was its weakness.

That's how I played the game as a kid, I only leveled pikachu, ran from every wild pokemon battle, avoided any trainers I could. It was pretty easy irregardeless because pikachu was like lvl 35 when everything I was fighting was lvl 20. Then I ran out of money searching the safari zone for surf and gave up that run.
