I think GF fucked up by only selectively choosing two starter trios to receive Megas in the first place. How am I supposed to look at them holistically anymore without seeing the Kanto and Hoenn starters and thinking "Well those are obviously the COOLER ones because they have a temporary fourth evolution stage!"
I never had a huge problem with the concept of Mega Evolution but I don't think the developers followed through on it as well as they could have.

The reason why it works that way is to give time to see what Pokemon are either sufficiently popular or sufficiently in need of a buff
