Alright /vp/ help me get through this. I'm trying to find a shiny Nidoran through random encounters in Heartgold. I might be at 1000, but i'm not even sure.

That's probably about average and my luck has just been terrible. I've only ever horde farmed in ORAS where I do have the charm and I've had pretty good luck, so this has been especially torturous.

I usually try to hunt my favourites first. Sometimes I just go for ones I like the look of that are also relatively easy to get (appear in hordes, can be DexNav'd, etc.)

actually, once you caught and used the red gyarados in battle its too late.
if you want to start rng'ing easy mode, try with gen v.
