I don't see a problem with having multiple "rivals" as long as one is actually challenging. It would have been fine if Serena was the actual "rival" in the likes of Silver or Barry, and Tierno/Pumpkin-head/Shauna were just side characters that occasionally gave you an easy battle.
I know that was their role in X/Y, but they ruined it by making Serena brain-dead and only give her 3 mons.
