Ditch ash entirely. He's had his adventure 6 times now, he's done. I think it would be cool to start out with two new main characters, based on the playable characters of the next region. Portray them in the show as fraternal twins. Rather than it just be the same 10 year old they've always had over and over going out on the same adventure, switch it up. They're 17 or something, raised in a sheltered household with parents who were members of team rocket, or some other Pokemon gang. The show starts out with them setting out to work their way up in the organization and eventually (like end of season 1) one of them starts to think differently and defects from the gang, then becoming the hero that were used to, making their way through the Pokemon league and fighting the rival team. Meanwhile the other twin makes their way up, eventually becoming a high powered admin in the organization with some misguided plan to "better the world". Eventually it all ends up with a final battle between brother and sister. Not only do I think it would be a great show, but also a better video game where you could chose to take the path of either twin.

I don't watch the anime regularly but I really liked the episode where Team Rocket impersonates Ash and his friends and then tricks Clemont into helping them complete a robotic Heliolisk that absorbs Pikachu's electric attacks. It was a funny episode and Team Rocket actually had a plan that would have worked if Clemont's inventions didn't fail every time; Team Rocket looked cool and threatening for the first time in a long time.

Considering they basically introduce everyone in every single episode too, the show obviously isn't written to primarily be a serial story, but one people, especially kids, can jump into whenever. Miss a few episodes? Forgot some characters or never saw them before? Literally the first time watching and wondering who these stupid Rocketto fucks are? Don't worry, they'll be pointed out.
That, and pleb Japanese comedy is built around repetition. It's like their kryptonite or something. Like Americans and shitty sitcoms. XY and XY&Z, more so the latter, are basically as close to proper serialized fiction with a sense of progression and continuity as Pokemon has ever really been. Though it's been awhile since I've seen DP, the other series fans like to talk up. And it's still pretty bargain bin. Not bad, pretty much always enjoyable and sometimes even legitimately good. But still clearly shows the brand's focus. This isn't so much an indictment of the show as a recognition of the constraints put on global children's entertainment brands.

The XY dub is the worst the Pokemon Anime dub has ever been, for starters, TPCi have officially done a worse job than 4Kids did, that's a major one.
Secondly, Team Rocket are more useless and flanderized than ever before, even in DP.
Thirdly, Serena didn't do much of anything for the first 47 episodes as a satellite love interest, then was a Performer in the middle 55 or so episodes, and went back to wanting Ash again soon after and that's it.
That's why I hate the Anime currently.

Three major reasons why the Pokemon English dub is terrible right now:
(1) Terrible voice acting, which is the standard for the English dub since Sarah Natochenny, James Cathcart, etc. became the VAs for the series because TPCi were too cheap to keep Veronica Taylor, Eric Stuart, and so on. The Pokemon's voices also went to crap from BW-XYZ, just listen to Goodra, Talonfalame, or Hoopa (Both)'s dub voices if you need proof of that.
(2) Terrible music replacement score: only about 12.5% of the Japanese OST has been kept from Seasons 17-19 as a whole, with the rest of it replaced with UFO, faux ballet, and opera stuff that doesn't fit the mood of the Series at all.
(3) Terrible script writing/dialogue from James Cathcart: basically, the man rewrites everything Team Rocket say into slang, alliterations, or rhymes, and Ash etc. also suffer, having dumbed down lines or lines of slang as well, all of which are not in the Japanese Version.
