Those were sequels, complete games with different stories, different protagonists, different characters and different Pokemon and new areas as well as additional forms. The most a third game has added has been slightly different stories (Suicune story in crystal, bonus starters in yellow, Origin forme and its world in Plat.)

Platinum does indeed make those games obsolete, but the changes are pretty minimal. Surfing speed and Pokemon disrtibution is tweaked. That's about it.
And HGSS sucks. Having to turn battle animations off because of how fucking long it takes to exit a fucking wild encounter, let alone how long battles or even one turn takes, makes the game boring as fuck. I'd rather just play Crystal. It's not like HGSS fixed ANY of the problems with the original GSC. Just prettier graphics and a slower engine.

If you want more unpopular opinions, I liked BW1 more than 2. They're both pretty on-par with each other, I'd say, but BW1 has less constant interruptions by NPCs which BW2 has a fuckload of. Plus, and this part is subjective, I liked having to only use Unova mon. Forced me to pick guys I wouldn't normally have used and I discovered a lot of new bros.

Platinum is really good despite how slow it is, and as much as I'm shitting on HGSS, they're still leaps and bounds better than fucking ORAS, so I can compromise with that.
I just think HGSS is a game where you should probably breed a team before you start playing then trade them in after you get the Pokedex since the Pokemon distribution is so bad. Not to mention the level curve, making Pokemon you catch late in the game a nightmare to level up.
