Because Pokemon has a competitor, Youkai Watch. In Japan Youkai watch is very popular with young children which is Pokemon's target audience, so to directly compete with them they started to simplify their designs and make things less complicated and detailed. It also seems they are borrowing some elements from Youkai's game design as well like the Quest Map.

If you read any of Masuda's latest interviews you will understand that this is his current way of thinking. To try and make Pokemon as simple as possible becauase they belive this will draw kids in more. Its the reason why difficulty in the games have been toned down greatly and why things such as Battle Frontier were not added in OR/AS
