From what I've heard, Dark type is Evil type in Japan. Explains a lot about the early dark types like Houndoom.
The moon provides light by reflecting sunlight, it's the only reason we aren't completely blind at night.

Also, why would the Moon, the largest source of natural light during the night, be related to darkness anyway? Case in point, the moon is never related to darkness in it of itself at all in any mythologies I can think of. Because, again, it's basic nature is being a light "source" like the sun, though significantly weaker (it's actually reflecting light from the sun, but we didn't really know that until very recently).

Aside from that, Dark-type moves involve cheap fighting tactics (which is why it's weak to Fighting), and all of the moves involving actual darkness/shadows (Shadow Ball, Shadow Claw, Shadow Sneak, Night Shade) are Ghost.

Nigh Slash in Japanese is "つじぎり" which means "killing a passerby in order to test a new sword".

Night Daze is actually Naito Da-zuto in Japanese too, so there's that. Night Slash is Tsujigiri, the historical practice of Samurai attacking passerby, usually defenseless, at a crossroads to test out their new sword or style. Often happened at night, though. Making Night Slash an oddly euphemistic translation.
I think the better description is that Dark type is mostly Evil/Asshole type, but Darkness is sometimes folded into that, especially over the years.
