The clouds look too conveniently placed, so I'm inclined to agree. I have a feeling they won't be too important though, maybe one as some post-game area to explore with non-regional dex mons and another for an event Pokémon maybe.
Also, that mechanical island looks like a new battle facility, or it could be PWT in full blown 3D.

We don't even know if the region is going to be less linear than XY yet. The only information I've seen about S&M today is that it's not going to have very many new Pokémon again because they're too afraid to show any new ones, the rivals are going to be as one-dimensional as the XY rivals, and that there's a feature that casualizes completing the Pokédex, the one piece of postgame that's been consistently satisfying to accomplish since Gen 1.

I'm not a competitivefag, but there are more important things to a game than its region. The plot (and handholdiness of said plot), wild distribution (which was too varied in XY, felt like a zoo), and trainer teams (which were weak-ass shit in XY) are more important than how the region looks.
You do have a good point about them not showing everything, but them showing nothing is too far in the opposite extreme. If they just showed me a few things that would relieve my fears about the games I'd be fine, but they haven't, and they're just showing things like the rival that are making me more worried.
