It definitely seems like there's routes that continue behind the islands. For example, it seems that continuing past PokeHonolulu is a long path that goes behind the island, looping back around to near the start. I'm guessing that's how you reach the waterfall in the top-right.

I had really liked the big ocean routes in Ruby and Sapphire. They had more freedom to them than the more linear land routes.

This is kinda strange.
Hawaii is known as the Big Island. Which it is in Alola.
Maui is known as the Valley Island, but doesn't feature any Valleys.
O'ahu is known as the Gathering Place Which fits because it's where you start off and shit about gathering.
Kaua'i is known as the Garden Island, but instead features a desolate valley (primarily).
Then you have Ni'ihau the Forbidden Island, which looks like it fits since it doesn't look like there's anyway to get there (other than boat) and no one lives on it.
Though, these maps are never representative of their original places, I feel Maui and Kaua'i should have been swapped.

It's not surprising that there are areas clearly oriented towards certain types like the snowcap mountain, volcano, rocky plateau, the big tree, etc., but does this area look like it might a swamp or marsh?

True Facts: there were no internment camps in Hawaii. This is because there were too many fucking Japanese people to realistically do so on the islands. Of course, the islands were under Martial Law during the war anyway, so it hardly mattered. At worst, I think a few suspected people were rounded up, but eventually returned because, again, there were too many Japanese people to push them around like that in Hawaii.
Not that they didn't already have something like that in the leper colony secluded on the peninsula of one of the islands. But it was pretty lax and unpopulated by WWII, and was officially shut down (though residences were allowed to stay and offered care) in 1969 anyway.
I'm getting tired of all of these 'based on' regions.

It's kind of an understated building for the E4, and the theoretical badge check gates would be pretty far from the start of theoretical Victory Road, so probably not, but it's a thought.
I love the west island that's largely undeveloped. I bet we'll meet the legendary there. I love the map, I don't mind that it's not that big a region because just walking around looks beautiful. I love that there will be sunsets. I like the misty path on the big island leading to the fortress village
