I really like Nate because the visor and more focus on his crazy palm tree hair makes his design really stand out among protagonists. The only problem with him at all anyways is the wetsuit when diving only even happens in post-game anyways.
Sun is practical as fuck, he's got no excess bullshit and an actual fucking proper backpack for the first time since Lucas, and even then it actually looks hefty for the first time since GSC Ethan. I'm actually tempted to say he might be the best since then.

Gold and Nate stick out much more than Hilbert imo. He's just boring to look at? Dry, washed out, plain? There's nothing really that exciting to look at, and his face in-game is actually kind of dull too. If we were to compare manga variations, yeah, sure Hilbert is a complete cutie - but almost all of them are a LOT better in the manga. If we were to compare that way I would have a much harder time.

I mean I don't hate or dislike any protag, I just don't like him as much when I look at his base design. Hilbert has the some of the highest potential to look the nicest when drawn well. I was also turned off Ruby because I only liked him for the white hair which turned out to be a beanie fml. I never bothered with the actual manga so I never knew till it was blatantly pointed out to me one day. Also he looks fucking weird in ORAS, especially since they made him look like a fucking cyclist.
I just don't think Hilbert is as nice to look at, everyone draws him super cute but he's not like that at all in the game? Again, if we were going by manga standards, then yes he IS that cute, but game-wise he's really, really standard.
My opinion about Gold and Nate being less dull should be quite obvious to most people. They definitely stick out when contrasted with Calme (X), Lucas (Diamond) and Hilbert. The use of colours, the flair, the contrast, the choice of face etc. But that's not to say that being more "expressive" means it's better for everyone, it's just better for me. c:
LASTLY, I don't particularly like the face of Sun. Hopefully we can change the god awful eye shape. Besides, he's Calme 2.0. Another character that can be customized, but looking at the base... eurgh.
