I once made a theory involving the ancient definition of the Japanese word for bug, mushi, where it referred to a type of spirit creature, as a way to explain Bug's interactions with Psychic, Dark, and Fairy. It's probably too obscure a reference for Gamefreak to have actually used though.

Psychic being weak against dark/bug/ghost due to those being basic fears and fear disrupting the mind is a common typing justification I've heard from quite a few people. How is that esoteric?
