Ash used 100% against Diantha to overpower her. She underestimated him until it got to the point she was about to lose. Ash calling for that last second Cut before he fainted was going to be the end of her Gardevoir.
The only offensive moves Gardevoir has are Moonblast and Shadow Ball, former of which requires to be charged up in the anime. You can see their Shadow Balls increasing in size throughout the battle, as with each one, Ash gave her a reason to put more power into them. Diantha had to Mega Evolve because 50% was too fast for Gardevoir, the Shadow Balls that she could easily spam earlier wasn't even able to be fired fast enough to hit Greninja, Greninja was able to destroy it before it even left Gardevoir's hands. If the spammable Shadow Ball is too slow, then the Moonblast that requires to be charged is even slower and will never hit Greninja.
100% completely sealed the deal, or would have. Gardevoir was still on the ground when Greninja was still going to go in for the kill. Gardevoir had to use the last bit of its power against TR, which is why it immediately reverted from its Mega form.

Ash was clearly out of it. Every Gym in XY so far, the Leader has had some crazy gimmick or strategy that Ash has had to overcome. And he's always done it. It's the main reason why every Gym battle is so hype in this series. The tactical Ash that can overcome the Leader wasn't there. The one who got too focused on using Greninja's full power to brute force himself into winning was, though. And that Ash was also the one who was questioning himself quite a bit after his loss to Shota.
Old Ash is back now, with a mastered 100% Synchro form for Greninja. He's going to rape the League.

So, once Wulfric inevitably eats shit and Ash gets his 8th badge, and once we get to the Pokebowl itself, then comes the obvious questions of what he has to deal with during the tourney itself.
In truth, there's only three ways they can truly make Ash lose by now, given how much he was able to git gud by now:

Stop your wanking. Diantha wasn't even serious for most of the fight and would have wreck the shit out of Ash even after Gardevoir had taken the water shuriken hit. Mega-evolved pokemon usually has a limit to how long they can fight. Ash mistimed his syncho, so him getting knocked out through over-exertion is not Diantha getting lucky on his behalf but her knowing how to maximize the time of her pokemon in their mega-evolved state where-as Ash does not. He went all out, and burnt him and his pokemon out fast. His loss is his own and not just an unlucky break. Remember, Diantha's Gardevoir was still in her mega-evolved form. She was not 'down for the count' like people like to claim.

The thing is, the only reason Ash fainted (and lost) is because his inexperience with synchro and not being able to proper control it. And even being the first time they attained 100% Synchro, they managed to take Diantha and her Waifuvoir aback, and matching her in power, at least on what we saw.

Doesn't matter. Greninja became so fast and powerful because Ash pushed the syncho and burnt him and Greninja out fasr. If he didn't, then he wouldn't have been able to outmove nor overpower Gardevoir. You can't have your cake and eat it too. There's only one place where Greninja is getting power from and it's from Ash. If there wasn't a limit, then why does Greninja always revert back after every time it went syncho?
Both Serena and the Sun/Moon girl should travel with Ash to Alola, and I like the idea of the new girl being Ash's cousin

The only thing synchro and megas have in common is the powe boost during battle and the change in appearance. Their mechanics, the power multiplier and their limitations are different.
Also, why would any trainer force a Pokemon to stay in a battle-oriented super mode while they just can simply revert the transformation and relax in a more natural state? Goku can stay as Super Saiyan for days without tiring but you don't see him doing that.

I have more of a feeling now that TF will hijack the league, and Lysandre will use a weapon that sucks the mega energy out of pokemon.

But either way, Lysandre will probably try to harness Bluni/Zygarde's power to reset everything after he's taken out the megas.
