The leaks said nothing about which Pokemon would be which type, it's just that Ground was also found on the starters page. Litten could easily be Fire/Ground.
Burrowing owls are also quite dainty, not exactly round, and are still capable of flight. They also don't have silent flight like other owls (and Rowlet) have.
