Cheren's not so bad in 2, but he was edgy in the originals, although N was the better rival out of them all in BW.
Barry is the friendly rival perfected. He had a goal, character arc in Platinum with his dad, and wasn't just suprisingly buff at the end. I like Blue as well but his final team was much to be desired, having shitty moves even in the remakes.

The really forced the difference between Cheren and Bianca way too hard. I'm sorry but I don't find the cutesy ditz airhead a cute archetype and to coutneract that they had Cheren as the careful, calculating know-it-all type and ended up the opposite extreme and therefore equally annoying to me. Tierno and friends were so bland and vague but at least they weren't extreme stereotypes, just nothing.
