Not everything can be made out of gas or ethereal antimatter. Possesion is easy as it gives a wider variety of shapes, like lost spirits mixed in with an elemental typing, or coffins, or golems.
Hell, there's even a haunted forest pokemon, and a two jack o lanterns. Face it, ghost is probably the best type in the sense that it doesn't really have any truly ugly pokemon outside of maybe, if you're taste just inclines that way, Mega Bannette and Giratina.

I also think the sheath is a lot cooler than the shield. Shame it doesn't have as based an ability as its final form, or I'd use it for Little Cup.

Half of it is from people who think Pokemon have to be based on Western myths, so anything above golems or animated armour is too far. The other half is that inanimate object Pokemon tend to be... generally worse designed. Magnemite/Grimer/Klink/Vanillite's evolutions are all very similar to their base forms, a lot of the object Pokemon tend to be just based on that object but with added googly eyes (friggin' pinecones, unchanged!), and then there's... Exeggcute, which is in an entire tier of bad design.
