I did a run of X where I got exactly 6 Pokemon before each gym and then got rid of all but one after each gym. I only let myself catch Pokemon from routes after the gym I just fought, and I had to catch the first 6 I saw. I kept Fennekin, Doduo, Emolga, Slowpoke, Trapinch, Haunter, Bergmite (replacing Doduo), Durant (replacing Emolga), and Poliwhirl (replacing Durant). It was a pretty fun run and got me to use Pokemon I normally wouldn't.
