You don't need to go hiking or camping to be a good pokemon trainer. You don't see professional boxers, and athletes camping in the forests to train, a good gym is enough.
There are exceptions of course, like training a pokemon to use a move like earthquake, but I have a feeling that there would be a lot of "banned" moves, just like in normal human fighting tournaments.

For all we know, Oak would tell Ash that he's discovered Snorlaxtite/Infernapetite/synchro for another one of Ash's mons and Ash would use Mega Whatever to promote the Gen VII Megas. Ash using a Gen VII mega seems likely since they usually promote the next gen during the league/end of the series.
Furthermore, magazines typically don't care about spoiling the next member of Ash's team unless it's a new Pokemon.
