Gen VI is the Gen I homage. Gen V is essentially a soft reboot. A lot of the Pokemon are reimaginings of Gen I Pokemon, rather than the whole generation making references to the first generation (Viridian Forest, Cerulean Cave, the legendary birds, etc.)
