It got adapted into an anime, and the card game that played a major role in it was turned into a real card game.
After the manga ended, Konami wanted to continue making the card game, so they produced new anime series about other kids playing the card game.
Yugi was never replaced, the series he was in just ended.

Kalos is my least favourite region, bland Gym leaders and mediocre evil team.

The whole manga was based off of games that the mangaka enjoyed his favorite being Magic the Gathering. With how inconsistent the card game's rules were during the "Duelists" portion of the manga, it's kinda clear that it wasn't made with the intention of selling cards.
The card game only became a thing after Konami got involved and when the 2000 anime was made which made the Duel Monster's rule set consistent.
