Yokai are ghosts or some shit, I dunno - based around japanese mythology...
Digimon are digital monsters, I don't know how that translates into animals and things with loads of stuff attached but that's their thing...
Pokemon are more based on natural things, even Vanilluxe is based on stalagtites, and Trubbish comes from the pollution of the natural world - arguable that it's pokemon's answer to foxes adapting to cities. It's when pokemon strays from it's nature-centric origins that people get mad at the designers, even if the people aren't fully aware of why they hate it.

I recently got my hands on Yo-Kai Watch für my 3ds and i have to say, its a really fun game.
I mean, it has nothing in common with pokemon. At least not more than other games in the same genre.
It is still a fun and interactive game, with cool looking Yo-Kais. Dont get me wrong, there are some really awful designs in there, but there are also really good looking monsters.

They're actually pretty basic, all things considered. Them and Reshiram/Zekrom BW are the most complex Pokemon designs can get, and even then they're nothing to Digimon.

Yes, it kinda plays itself. Im only 1h and 30min into the game, but you can have interactions with your Yo-Kais. Using a special skill (you have to play a little "minigame"), focus your attacks, rotate your monsters out, feed the enemies and more.
The hunting part is also really good.
Dont get me wrong, i wouldnt play Yo-Kai over Pokemon, but its still a fun game to play once in a while.
If you like these kind of games, you should give it a shot.

My problem with both yo-kai watch and digimon is that some of the monsters are almost entirely (or completely, in digimon's case) humanoid.
Even our most human like pokemon are still clearly monsters in face or body.

in Digimon's case, isn't data a thing made by humans, hence human data is often uploaded all over the place? Collection-wise (depending on game) you either have 1-2 allies that keep dying and being reborn like Phoenixes or just uploading data you find.
in yo-kai watch's case, a good number of them were human who eventually died and became yo-kai. Guess most aren't 100% monsters. Far as I know you don't keep them in medals, instead use them like cellphones to call them over to help out, and then part ways when all is said and done.
Though if you're looking for the 'mon' in monsters, the two might not be the best choice in games.

The only ones I thought "Wow what a fucking rip off" for a fleeting bit were the baku and the Electabuzz thing. Baku are a pretty common and concrete concept but this one being purple/pink with a flower on its face is what got it for me and the horns on the Elctabuzz oni thing got me there (I would also say the general body shape but I mean, for a cartoony design for what I guess it's supposed to be what else would it be shaped like).

That explains the concept a little, but not WHY they fused a kappa with a CD player. Lotad was combined with a lilypad for example since kappa were said to have dishes on to pof their head and lilypads are often sort of interpreted as bowls or plates.
