I think it just goes to show a pokemon, a first stage one at least, doesn't have to have that deep of a concept. it's just a cutely designed round owl. Conversely, I can appreciate that Popplio has an interesting idea its trying to convey but I feel it failed to convey it in a way that doesn't make it look extremely lame in my opinion, so having an interesting idea behind something doesn't necessarily make it inherently better either.
I'm kind of irritated. I was on board with Rowlet the second I saw him, then I realized that literally almost everybody and their mother wants him too.

I know that I shouldn't be influenced by other fans, but the fact that this thing basically became the Tumblr mascot turned me off it immensely. Not that I was particularly attached to any of them, but now Rowlet is out. I don't usually go for grass starters anyways, I guess.

"Oh Pokemon is doing to much and is different from when I was kids." Now enter a rowlet a very nice, cute, and basic design. Its just a shiny new thing. Its the same deal with everyone claiming this is the best starter trio in a long time. We literally know nothing about them but how they look and even then I personally think Popplio is a pretty weak link design-wise even ignoring clown seal concept because of how its almost totally made up of simple shapes sort of stuck together like a clay model. It makes it look unfinished and sort of unnatural, like something that doesn't have all the pieces there imo. The way its nose is attached to its face and its tail really illustrate it for me. Rowlet is one simple shape but that's part of the design and even then it's not just a circle, thats just its silhouette.
