Gangbang when?
The fight between Ash and Serena is a perfect example of a one-sided delusion. Throughout the entirely of XY and XY&Z, name me ONE TIME where Ash responded to Serena in a way that was amour and not friendship:
- When Ash helped Serena out when they were young, it was SERENA who was blushing. Ash was just helping Serena up like he does everyone. This is proven in XY&Z 28 when Ash holds out his hand to the Pokémon in a flashback similar to how he held out his hand to Serena in XY 1.
- When Serena gave Ash the present, Serena was clearly blushing, since her intention was amour-based, but when Ash gave Serena the blue ribbon, there was no blushing present.
- There have been COUNTLESS scenes with Serena loving Ash (getting mad at Milfie, literal daydreams, etc.), but there have been ZERO scenes with Ash considering Serena was anything other than a friend.
The reason for this is all very simple. As fun as it is to run the amour train and spread meme magic, Ash is INCAPABLE of having a girlfriend. Ash is basically a living representation of "be the very best," so he physically cannot have a girlfriend. If he ever did get one or even a wife, it would be a "Goku" type of situation where he "loves" her but is too busy trying to get stronger to spend that much time around her.
Even if the writers forced Ash to be with Serena, we would NOT be seeing any two-sided romantic relationship. At best, we'd see Serena acting lovey-dovey with Ash being oblivious and going with the motions hoping that it's over soon so he could get to his next battle.

Although even Serena doesn't continue with Ash there're issues with Palermo/Yashio and their reasons, some are contradicting and some outright weird for the "morals" the anime has been throwing around since the beginning, like a pokémon trainer to not rely on her pokémon is simply absurd.

From what I've seen over at other Pokemon anime discussion sources, most viewers still rank DP higher than XY. Hard to beat Paul/TeamGalactic/J/contest battles and whatnot.
However if you're into shipping (which seems really popular around here) then XY is automatically ranked as the best series.

Except they didn't have a super special snowflake mode. Charizard is literally one of Ash's best pokemon friends, and arguably the strongest (counting regular forms only); Infernape's schtick was its history with Paul while having an abnormally strong Blaze.
Froge, on the other hand, has a (as today) unique Super Mode that literally links Trainer and Pokemon together, and apparently that form is something that only appeared once before.

Still, Greninja's here because it advertises the XY games. When the S/M games are around the corner there's literally zero reason to keep it around.
Plus, it would make quite a silly situation for Ash to have his fully evolved mega powered Greninja on his team at the same time he's got a base stage S/M starter, a base stage S/M regional bird and so on.

I personally still rank DP as the best one. But XY is just crawling so damn close to that top spot now. Where DP has an incredibly strong rival, best villainous team and the overall best narrative storyline along with the best league arc yet, XY has other qualities that wins over DP, like animation, variation in episodes and mini-arcs, drama and main characters. And of course an official ship that adds a bonus incentive to be invested in the show, though I would not rank the seasons based on it.
XY just needs a strong finish of the Team Flare arc, a good enough league arc (and really, how the hell can it not be awesome after them having so confidently built up Ash's character, team and rivalry up to this point) and a satisfying conclusion that ties up the lose ends before Ash fucks off to hawaii-land. It's a strange feeling really, I'm so fucking hyped right now, but it'll be over so soon.

Yes, it's without a doubt XY's strongest point, but good animation doesn't make a good series on its own. And it's not like I can't appreciate older seasons for how they look, except for battles maybe which are hard to watch after getting used to XY. pic related
My least favorite series when it comes to animation and/or the way it looks would have to be AG. It's like the N64 of Pokémon animation, where the digital coloring was quite new but the animation and artstyle itself was unappealing (to me).
