Eh, Gen 6 features are probably coming back, they don't require additional work.
There's two sides of the story here. One, Pokemon games would be amazing if they included all the past features like contests, seasons, soaring, dexnav, amie, customization, etc.
But at the same time, if you put everything into one game and make it the best ever, why bother buying any more Pokemon games?

Why not just allow only a specific selection of Pokémon be given the option to follow you? Kinda like Amity Square in Sinnoh. I can understand the issue with size discrepancies of certain Pokémon that would be made even more awkward in 3D, but a good amount of Pokémon wouldn't have that issue. Like Pikachu for instance. Gen 6 even already has overworld models for some Pokémon that move around and you can interact with. Sure, not everybody will be able to get their favorite Pokémon out of this but at least some of them will. It's better than nothing.

Only the giant pokemon pose a problem, and I'm sure they wouldn't allow you to use them if they would destroy the environment you are in. It would be the same thing like trying to ride a bike inside or use your fishing pole on land, "I can't do that now/here" type message.
