I don't do competitive much, so I'm confused as to why Talonflame is so good.
I mean, look at those stats. Its attack isn't very high, even if it does get Brave Bird. Also, surely it doesn't MATTER how high your speed stat is, if you have priority with Gale Wings anyway?

It mostly comes in on weakened threats.

It means it won't get outsped by opposing priority users.
It also learns excellent moves such as Bulk Up and Will-O-Wisp that allow it to set up for a sweep, increase its longevity, or cripple an opposing pokemon.
Priority Roost is also a huge factor, since it means it is nigh-immune to being revenge killed in return.
High speed means it doesn't rely solely on Brave Bird for damage and can pull out a Flare Blitz if it chooses to carry it.

You are really underestimating the power of Gale Wings. Choice Banded 120 BP priority attacks hit really hard, even from 81 attack. Unbanded variants also get priority roosts, and can swords dance to seriously threaten anything without a flying resist.
Although I think Talonflame is very overrated in terms of it being unbalanced (people on /vp/ act like it is some kind of unstoppable war machine) it is very much a meta-defining Pokemon and not having an answer for it/having a team weak to it is asking for a very shitty win rate.
I love my Talonflame, its the best regional bird imho. I didn't even think I'd like it all that much, I caught is an after thought when I was halfway through the game and going through that skating rink area. It ended up being a real bro and I liked to pair it with my Raichu in double battles becauseI don't like to win. ;_;

I used to run a Careful, Will o wisp, Roost and bulk up set with no item. Priority Acrobatics and knock off immunity was so good.
