The issue here is that he's been trying and failing to understand how exactly to make Greninja's mysterious transformation/synchro evolution work. First he came close to defeating his strongest rival and Diantha herself but fainted before being able to finish them off, then he tried to force the transformation like a regular mega evolution, completely failed to trigger it and got defeated by Shota, the rival who idolizes him as a mentor. Lastly, he couldn't defeat Wulfric (again, under Shota's eyes) and Greninja got severely hurt because he was unable to properly focus on the battle because of his insecurity about the synchro. It's out of character because it's meant to be, the stress of the situation got to him.

I'd say something, but no, he's never had this kind of problem before, he can't just train himself out of it, and apparently, just "believing" doesn't work, either. In fact, it's a power that effectively NO ONE knows, so no one can help him, either. Basically, he's fucked.

If you can't tell the difference between Ash getting trashed by Paul after Chimchar evolved and still got bodied with a 0-4 or Ash losing to Wulfric in a 3 vs 3 where Wulfric didn't even use his full party and had his Avalugg trash all three of Ash's pokemon while trying to prove himself to Shota who already beat Wulfric and won against Ash in the previous episode and some random battle with barely any emotional weight to it like most rival and gym battles then you might have brain problems.
