For random play online:

You and your opponent switch teams after pokemon selection and order selection.

Sinnoh Battle Arcade style roulette, but it can't inflict Burn/Poison/Paralysis/Sleep/Freeze. Instead, it can cause permanent weathers (that can still be temp altered, but return to the roulette weather after their duration ends), permanent terrains (Electric, Fairy, Grass, and the Pledge combo terrains), or battle-long causing normal confusion/infatuation/taunt/torment/heal block/embargo/trapped upon switch-in. (only one of these is chosen by roulette, but that one is applied to all pokemon upon switch-in for that battle(regardless of gender for infatuation)(these can be snapped out of or wear off as normal moves that cause them, if they would wear off))


For some kind of tournament play:

Emerald Battle Factory style in a way, where you can choose to exchange your team with your most recent defeated opponent's, before seeing your opponent's available pokemon.

Battles drop the turn-based aspect. All moves now have a built-in cooldown which you must wait for it to recharge roughly equivalent to thier PP. In general there would be no global cooldown so you could spam a number of moves at the same time if you wanted to (with some exceptions; Hyper Beam would cause a GCD for instance).

Stack 'em Battle!

You send out three pokemon, that stack on top of one another. Heavier pokemon are sorted under lighter ones. Only the topmost pokemon gets to attack, and most attacks hit the bottommost pokemon. Some moves, like waterfall or something can hit up the stack.

You must be careful when switching to not upset the weight ratio, if you do your stack falls and spends the next turn climbing back on top of eachother. For that turn, all of your mons may be hit by anything, and can get hit by wide range attacks. Moves like Dragon Tail switch out a random stack member.

Some moves and abilities will be retooled in how they are used in a tower, and various moves will be introduced that do nothing in other formats.

Each player gets a random team featuring one Zoroark and you need to identify it, once you think you've found it you can press the 'stop' button and choose which one you think it is. Right and you win wrong and you lose. Obviously team preview is disabled.

Battles where speed means more than who moves first. Also means how often you can move. Specific moves have their own "speed" as well. This allows for a wider variety of moves to serve a purpose. If you can use Bite 3 times in the same time-frame that you could use Return once, it makes even basic moves worth considering. This also solves low accuracy moves as you can make them slightly higher "speed" to balance their chance of missing and so on. Could also make slower mons more useful by having buffs (not necessarily stat increases , though that would be an interesting change, think reflect, weather, trick room) reset based on the mon's speed, so the slower the mon the longer it keeps a buff.

Interesting, because the immediate thought is "setup sweep" but you'd run out of pp. The only mon that has a way to recover pp (leppa berry recovery) while have a good setup move is tropius, harvest+dragon dance.

Tropius can learn it AND he gets Harvest as a HA, while also getting access to synthesis, sunny day and tailwind.
Combine that with someone who has access to heal pulse and dual screens and you have the ultimate support for a setup sweeper. Could probably have your middle mon get a baton-pass chain, probably best to just pass bellydrum and a few cosmic powers. Have your sweeper just spam rockslide or something and GG.

That's hardly a new format, though having the option for battling outside a facility would be nice (or just having the option in game at all).

A more daring idea would be a rental system where you rent from your opponent. To avoid having your opponent only bring shitmons, you could have your team combined with half from your team and half from your opponent team, but without any choice of which from each. That way, you could easily end up with the shitmons on your team.

Doubt said format would work in any manner though, probably all sorts of broken.

Crits are removed unless forced.
Moves with %status inflict chance are changed to inflict status every X turns.
PP is balanced to account for all moves having 100% accuracy.

Platform Battles:
The player and opponent's Pokemon each stand on top of a platform suspended in mid-air.

These platforms have their own HP independent of the Pokemon, and if the platform's HP reaches 0, it falls down and it is an automatic lose for that team.

The heavier the Pokemon standing on the platform, the more HP it loses every turn as it is weighed down.
The platform can also be damaged by both friendly and opposing attacks.
Flying and levitating Pokemon are also forced to stand on the platform to avoid keeping its HP undepleted, removing their immunity to Ground moves.
