I actually enjoyed fighting trainers from past generations. I hope they at least integrate that in sun/moon.

Have a dedicated post-game beachfront that throws a Luau every night after 7pm or something. Different nights different important characters from past games are there. Gym leaders, Frontier Brains, old Rivals, Professors, other important characters.
You can walk around and talk with them and challenge them to a battle if you want. Maybe offer some kind of BP system for prizes.
At the end of the night, 10 or 11pm, have a send-off event like the float at the end of the wi-fi room in HGSS

After the Emerald Frontier comes back.A game with both the Frontier and the PWT would be a great compromise though.
