I've worked in restaurants all over this country as both a cook and server and I can assure you that it most certainly is. I work at an upscale joint right now and none of our servers make more than $2.50. It's shitty and I don't necessarily agree with it, but to try to deny that's the way it is is simply delusional
>>
>>26458667
Amerifat here, and when we get shit service, the telltale tip is a single penny, face-down. Tipping is expected, because like >>26458825
says, minimum wage for tippable positions is insanely low. Practically all of their wages come from tips, which some places even force them to share with the other workers (bullshit socialism, is what I call that.)

I, personally, like to tip well whenever the service is reasonable. I generally tip 20+% because I enjoy making people happy, but not all service is worth it. The other day I had this waitress who literally was sitting down at another table and checking her texts between tables. I waited like 15 minutes with an empty drink and I left her three dollars on a 40 dollar meal. Cause that's some stupid shit.
>>
>>26458845
It's actually not
I work at an Applebee's and I make $2.40 an hour.
>>
>>26458845
I'm against tipping, but legaly he's right.
There's a federal law that excempts restaurants and such for paying minimum wage if they allow the servers to ask for tips. The practice extended to other businesses later.
I for one believe that if you have a shitty job, then you shouldn't have been a waste of flesh and air and gotten yourself an education.

Granted, I've never worked one such position myself, because I refuse to have wages dependent upon the generosity of the entitlement generation, but I've had friends that did. And I know for sure it's less than $3 per hour.

Pretty much, yes, it's considered incredibly rude not to tip at a restaurant. It shouldn't be thought of as a bonus for good service, but as a baseline for anything other than outright shitty service.

That is slowly changing, though. Some restaurants have recently eliminated tipping and are building the cost into their menu prices. It's a small number of places doing this so far, but it seems to be picking up steam.

The restaurant would probably fire you though for not making enough money for yourself and them having to pay you to reach minimum though
>>

I work as a server at a bar/restaurant/movie theater and I make a solid $4.30 an hour. I can't imagine what it's like for people who work in shitty backwoods areas. I'm fucking giving my soul to this place.

>>
>>26459033

Many people agree, but for whatever reason we've developed a system where wait staff is paid largely through tips. Until it changes (which, like I said, it slowly is), forcing a tip on customers may be ridiculous, but it's how it's done.

What if you pay in cash and don't have enough to pay the tax?
>>
>>26459044

Let's say I'm buying a soda.

The price for the soda on the tag is $1.50. I take it to the register, the cashier rings it up, and tells me with tax it's now $1.84. I pay $1.84.

If I don't have a couple pennies, cashiers usually just let it slide. Forgetting to pick up change pretty much never happens. Cashiers don't want to mess with the drama of some guy coming back and being pissed at them. They just want to work their shitty job and go home.

Then you don't get the item.

But that isn't really a thing that happens. People know that tax is added on, and don't carry around the precise amount of the item without accounting for the tax.
>>
>>26459079
You either brought enough money with you or you didn't. So you can either pay for it or you can't. You know tax isn't that much, right? Like a soda for $1.50 might end up being $1.57 with tax depending.

If it's a restaurant that has built service charges into the menu prices for the purpose of abolishing tips, then no, obviously there's no need to tip extra. And in that case it's not "forcing" you to tip, it's making it unnecessary to tip by paying a fair wage without shifting some discretionary portion to the customer.

In America, they tip because its legal for employers to have the customers cover their employees wages and pay them less than minimum wage.

>>26459531

I'm not a waiter. Never have been. I'm just someone who knows how to participate in a fucking society. If you can't or won't tip, don't eat at a restaurant. Make your own food, so you don't have to worry about service costs.
>>
People are arguing against a minimum wage and calling people entitled for asking as much?

Is this attitude really that common in the US?
>>
>>26459499

>Is this attitude really that common in the US?
Not really, just among internet trolls who still live off mommy and daddy and therefore don't know how the real world works.
>>
>>26459559

>get a different job

I'm not a waiter you dumb fuck. Do you think that everyone who doesn't agree with you on something is part of some monolithic collective?

>or raise some shit.

The notion of some waiter doing that is hilarious, all that would happen is they'd get fired instantly and if he drew any attention to it he'd just get called a greedy prick who deserved to get fired.
>>
>>26459467

But the people who "don't tip" usually don't care when their service is good. They just expect to receive good service when giving nothing to them in return.
>>
>>26459555
>If you can't or won't tip, don't eat at a restaurant.
God damn it America, a person has a right to eat at a restaurant and not tip you jackass regardless of whether they want to or not.
Also there's simple human error, should someone be punished for a simple mistake?

Fuck off, expecting a tip should not be part of your or any society. People should only tip if they feel like it, not because they feel it's necessary for a good experience.
>>
>>26459570

But the hebrews didn't even plant miniature hydrogen bombs in this thread like they did in the Twin Towers.
>>
>>26459581
>Do you think that everyone who doesn't agree with you on something is part of some monolithic collective?
No I think that they should have some self worth and not work a degrading job they know doesn't pay the bills unless they get lucky.

> and if he drew any attention to it he'd just get called a greedy prick who deserved to get fired.
And this is why no one takes America seriously, these people are being underpaid and they're the ones that are greedy if they think it's wrong?
>>

>>
>>26459587

>Fuck off, expecting a tip should not be part of your or any society.

Bingo.

>People should only tip if they feel like it

Right.

But the problem is, the RESTAURANTS have made a system where the idea of customers voluntarily electing to reward members with a token payment for good service has been corrupted.

Instead of giving waitstaff an incentive to be as awesome as humanly possible, above and beyond the basic requirements the position, INSTEAD, the restaurant industry has gone to the government and said "hey look, they get tips, so why should WE have to pay them the normal minimum wage, we should be allowed to pay them LESS than minimum wage" and then the RESTAURANTS turn around and guilt members of the public for not paying an additional minimum of 15% aside from the advertised cost of the food.

This isn't hard to understand.

To top it off it's not even all of America.

Has it ever occurred to you that your society might be a little messed up?
>>
>>26459033
>Minimum wage should be mandatory for every establishment in America.
The employer has to make up the difference if tips dont earn them enough.

But there is a benefit to tips, and thats getting paid in cash every night or every other night.
Walking home with ~$25-40 on a 5 hour shift isnt too bad, keeps gas in the car instead of having to ration for 2 weeks every single time you get paid. But then you get a whopping ~$240 added to your account every check and youre still fucking broke

Crystal had a fucking one day per week if you wanted to purchase an elemental beam while the rest of the tutors were one time use. Probably it was too hard making more TM slots...

Emerald has introduced a better system.

Crystal's Battle Tower was the worst half made facilities, no auto levelling,
non sense hard mode, no prizes.
If anything Gen 3 as improved and convalidated it.

The contests are a hit or miss, honestly Hoenn system was definitely superior to Sinnoh which was very forceful on the DS touch screen feature part, ORAS Hoenn also made it easier but prettier kinda. Unova musicals were the worst contest adaptation with the Pokewood.
No hype, tedious, forced tutorial.

Literally one of my favorite things in ORAS is sitting on a bed with Looker. He only has 1 line of dialogue but the music is there and Looker is the one thing that gives me the feels in all of Pokemon. And the Looker post-game plot was the best thing in XY, aside from a few new pokemon, like Yveltal.

My only real complaint about XY and ORAS is that the post-game battle facility is so simple. I want the Frontiers like in Emerald, Platinum, HG/SS. I love all the different rules and varying styles of play.

And for those complaining about contests, they're not mandatory so I don't get the big deal. They're a way to earn berries, to get a cool animation when your mon enters battle, and a fun alternative way to train your pokemon, for those that want to do it.

If you can't find a way to make money after having passed a course of study which SHOULD give you a much higher level of the use of the English language and knowledge of its history and literature, then you're probably the type of actual autist who can amass incredible amounts of information but needs physical help taking a shower every morning.
>>
>>26461658
The useless thing about English majors is that they tend to try to make a living writing novels, but it's, as anon said, already saturated, and only the very lucky or the incredibly skilled can make much of a living using their English degree. Even my English major friends are aware of that but have confidence in their skills. So far only one of them has a published novel.

>writing novels

No, you try to get get a job writing copy or editing or some technical shit, writing novels is something I do during time I might otherwise spend playing video games or dicking around places like right here.

Its like being a photography major thinking you're going to get rich taking pictures of flowers in the park, that's something you can do and maybe make a name for yourself and if you're REALLY lucky make some money on, but most of the work out there is gonna be shit like taking photos of food for magazines and websites or doing weddings or something.
>>
>>26462299

I don't think pure altruism can result in a world with the computers and internet we're using right now, even if that world would be an objectively more humane and ideal world.

I think we need a mix of many ideas, there has to be some incentive for individual initiative, but what that's mutated into is an engine that creates nothing but cash flow at the cost of many people having an opportunity to have a secure simple life working for a living and minding their own business.
>>

Hard to get rich doing magazine columns, though, that's what I mean. You can do ok writing for a magazine or being an editor, and you can try to make it big by getting individually published, cuz that's the only way to make a lot of money as a writer. I know, the arts are a strange profession, but too many people try to get a degree in one of the arts and think they'll become a known name by being in the business. Same with acting.
