Why is Opposite Gender Player Character consistently the worst rival in the series and why do people want it again in Sun/Moon?

So the character design doesn't go to waste. They don't HAVE to be the rival (something like DPPt/HGSS opposed to BW1/BW2) but they certainly don't have to vanish altogether.
They can't have personality because they still need to be a self inserting player character who acts the same regardless of their gender.

As rivals they don't have any self-insert character characteristics whatsoever, so that's already out of the window. And who's to say they can't have different personalities based on gender? The dabbled at bit with it in ORAS, maybe they'll put more work into it in SM or some later game.

They can't allow the alternate MC to be rude or have any flaws because it would affect how the animu/fanon version of the character is perceived, so they have to be your personal buttpat dispenser
