Assuming the rules are basically the same, I'd catch something out of my backyard and go on a journey asap. I wouldn't be trying to win the league or anything. I'd just wander around a lot and have a few battles or scavenge for items when I needed money.
I always thought that one of the coolest things about Pokemon was that trainers could just take off whenever they felt like it and basically go for a really long walk without it being too dangerous.
