Is Ampharos the most used Pokemon in G/S, and HGSS runs? It feels like most teams I see on /vp/ and elsewhere have one.

It's your only choice for an Electric-type in G/S outside of Lanturn which isn't very good and Raikou which is one of three (two in Crystal) roaming Pokémon. In Crystal you instead have to get lucky with the second egg you receive and hatch an Elekid or a Pichu.

People usualy get quagsire too. Quagsire is a bulky ground pokemon so it didnt get run down by Whitney's roll out.

Magneton's issue is that it learns like no moves. You're stuck with Spark (Tbolt if you wanna play Voltorb Flip) until Discharge at level 40 and Mirror Shot/Flash Cannon come even later.

Eh, GSC/HGSS definitely had horrible type distribution among other things that weren't fixed but I dunno if it really added problems. Just didn't fix any of the existing ones. I guess Gamefreak just assumed nobody cared since GSC was already so loved.

The safari zone let you catch mons that were Kanto only in the original (Larvitar,Murkrow, Misdreavous).
Also, adding in some cross-gen evos(Ambipom, Mamoswine,Yanmega) helps give more variety too.

The issue isn't/wasn't (entirely) lack of Kanto-only Johto Pokemon, though the cross gen evos made some fo the shitmon you were stuck with in GSC better. GSC just has absolutely horrible, terrible, no good, very bad type distribution. They didn't even really figure that out until DP (where they didn't have enough of certain types, but placed the few specimens of specific types in very choice spots, like ponyta rightouside Gardenia's gym) and didn't REALLY do it well until BW and XY.

You're not getting ice beam/tbolt on lanturn in g/s, and once gen 4 rolls around, ampharos actually gets coverage.

It's one of the most used pokemon in any games that it is available in. I have used it so much in BW2 and HGSS I have to remind myself not to use it anymore.
It helps that it's pretty much always very early in the game, and stays useful for the entire game, whereas many early game pokemon drop off in usefulness after a point. About the only games it's not found early in is Emerald and XY, not counting games where you simply can't get it of course.
I love the entire line and it's a mainstay on my team, so it works out well enough for me.

I started using Mega Ampharos on Showdown on a whim, it's bulky as fuck and hit hard to boot. If it gets Parabolic Charge and it gets buffed to 70 power like giga drain or drain punch, Mega Amphy will be OU
I haven't ever used it, my friends haven't, and I don't see it popping up in too many other communities' teams.

In my 7 year old mind, i couldn't see the "caveman" pattern on it as anything but a diaper. This was followed by disappointment as i realized it didn't get much outside of Surf.I don't hate totodile or feraligatr, but i'd never use them ingame.
