Bug type gym used to wreckt me when I got Chikorita. Then I started over leveling her, and she beat it. Took a couple fury cuts to the face by scyther and survived. She's fine.
Gets fucked by 5 out of 8 gyms in its region, is built to be a defensive war of attrition mon but doesn't have the moves to do it like Bulbasaur does on top of that being a really fucking boring playstyle for single player
It's supposed to be the Tank/Wall of the 3 but with how good Typhlosion and Feraligatr are on the offensive it just gets outclassed. To be fair though, grass is pretty bad in general for Gen 2.
Your first encounters are Sprout Tower, Falkner and Bugsy, all which aren't fun with Chikorita. Then there's Morty, Jasmine, Claire, the Rockets and all their poison pokes, Koga, Karen and Lance.
Not to mention how bad the other grass options are. Unless you get a call from a trainer, you can't evolve Weepinbell or Gloom til Kanto. Jumpluff is a joke, Sunflora isn't much better. Tangela is just there. Really gen 2 grass is equivalent to gen 4 DP fire: there aren't many to choose from and, aside from the starter, they're all pretty awful.
