play your first game, with your first starter, don't preplan it at all just catch whatever looks nice. Give em cool names and try to picture the battles. Get high first if you can, that usually helps me

Part 2 to this, catch shitmons you haven't used early on, try them out. Sometimes you get really attached to them (giving them nicknames helps, two of my best bros were an Audino and a Chimecho) and if you don't like them after a while replace them
