~70 is the new standard for new Pokemon numbers since GF doesn't want to over-saturate with too many Pokemon and is also putting design and marketing resources into Mega Evolutions rather than new Dex entries
Most of the "muh patterns" type arguments for such a thing as a "reset Gen" aren't based on very much, that sort of pattern just arises from the natural ebb and flow of things, not from some pre-defined plan GF has. BW getting sequels, remakes skipping a gen, and no third version for XY all pretty clearly demonstrate that 'patterns' are by no means set in stone and aren't useful by themselves for making predictions.
