That being said, Gen 2 was just more pokemon. felt more like an expansion then another game
Gen 3 was sort of hype being new with the GBA and all.
Gen 4 was, again, more pokemon. But it was new for the DS and was supposed to be the best yet so, Later hype for HGSS was solely based on nostalgia.
Gen 5 took me by surprise, I expected to hate it and badmouth it and it turned out to be the most awesome set of pokemon games yet.
Gen 6 was trash, horrible, 3D nonsense with a terribly overthought story that had no reason to exist in a childrens monster game. its designs were horrible, its remakes were horrible, thought it was the end of pokemon for me.
Cautiously optomistic about 7, anything is better then gen 6, but it'll probably suck too, so meh.

Gen 1 was only good for Stadium and Pinball.
Gen 2 was as close to perfect as Pokemon could get.
Gen 3 and 4 came out during that age where hating pokemon was the "in" thing, so I have some bias. But even still I thought Diamond & Pearl were terrible games and Pokemon Ranger was just a tech demo for the touchscreen that sold enough copies to make unneeded sequels.
Gen 5 was a great soft reboot of the series and Pokemon Conquest was fun as fuck.
Gen 6 was mediocre at best. X and Y were palatable but ORAS were just awful. I can't help but think anyone who found ORAS to be good must either be contrarian, or they're just plain desperate to see their favorite region in 3D.Mystery Dungeon is terrible. If you like it, then you'd probably like anything with Pokemon in the title.
Gen 5 was trash and the only pokemon generation I couldn't finish playing all the way through.

Considering generation 1, I simply didn't know about the gb games when they were released, I was more focused on the card game and then I saw gold version in a used shop and my mom bought it for me. HG/SS are definitely worth playing. Just a heads up though, the leveling around the 7th and 8th gym is still pretty low so take on the Rocket Base/Lake of Rage event at Mahogany right after the 4th gym before heading west to Olivine and Cianwood.
Gen 1 holds up pretty well. If anything that pic of the "Problems of Gen 1" is more like a quick reference guide for how to turn some of their programming mistakes into tactics and exploits. Or you could check out Fire Red and Leaf Green which takes care of all the bugs and gives a few dark moves to contend with the overpowered Psychics. FR/LG is one of the most popular ROMS on coolROMs so check them out if you're interested. A shame GF pumped them out right before the Phys/Spec split so even the remakes feel somewhat dated in the battle department despite the nice Gen 3 visuals.

It took everything that was good about the previous games and improved on them, had tons of post game content and actually felt like a long well thought out journey after playing both games.
