This, holy fuck, every time I make some level of advancement in the game, NPCs hijack the hell out of it. After the team plasma fight in that tiny cave, I just quit because I'm fucking sure that each time I make progress, I'll have to do some inane shitastic sidequest for my 'friends'

Well, consider yourself incredibly wrong and incompetent. Seriously, that's enough to make you quit? A couple early game cutscenes to establish the plot? Literally every game has this. I just finished Black for the first time in my life and it is easily the best Pokemon game. You are truly missing out if you let minor bullshit like that stop you.
And fun fact,the NPC interaction in the game is nowhere near excessive, and I was never bothered by it or gave it a bit of doubt.
