Bug type appreciation thread
All of the bug catchers unite and discuss the best type
Gen V saved bugs.
Thanks, Unova!
My favorite bugs. Beedrill, ariados, scizor, and volcania. Venomoth and butterfree honorable mentions including heracross and pinsir.

Indeed my friend

Unova made me like bugs. I've used one on my teams since Black, minus OR.
Swadloon and Surskit are my favorite Pokémon, of course I'm a bug catcher.

Almost all my favorite bug types are from Gen V
Heracross still my favorite pokemon of all time.

Same, Anons. I did a mono bug team in White 2 and loved it. Volcarona is beyond Bro tier.

Sounds like a great idea i should try this someday

i didn't give a shit about any bug types until gen 5
I love Venomoth.

Me too. I also love this little guy, doomed to be just my mascot mon for the rest of his days.

Bug type Question:
How do you make bug types better while still maintaining the bug style of fighting? That is, not just giving them bug-blizzard or higher BST.
I think infest was an interesting move but not good enough.
Sticky web is good as an entry hazard and very fitting for spider mons.
Bug lacks good abilities too.
>tfw lack of flying and surfing bugs are ruining my immersion

Scyther, Masquerain, Galvantula, Joltik and Surskit for me

The main problem is that the original "gimmick" for most Bugs was that they were early evolving trash. Evolve early to get a higher than average BST then, but pretty useless compatively beyond the early game. That was fully half of the original bugs (the Caterpie and Weedle lines). Paras and Venonat were middling, held back by poor typing, stats, and a lack of good stab (though Venomoth and Butterfree did get Psychic, which was killer in Gen I). Scyther and Pincer were okay enough for their Gen. Only Gen V really broke away from that original gimmick. Gen VI's only bug was this too, but they did switch it up. They gave it a solid enough niche to use, with compound eyes and hurricane.
You're right that they shouldn't just shit out a Bug Blizzard, and they definitely shouldn't make them all Bug/Steel. I'm not too sure what would be done. A general lack of BST has really been the major obstacle, and they've shown a willingness to make Bugs not tied to that. A few more unused double typings would be nice, especially a full Bug/Water pokemon. And definitely less Bug/Flying, for god's sake. Maybe some sort of crit bug? I don't think we've got any of those, and there's few mons good for Crits overall even with the buff to crit chance buildup. Maybe some more moves/abilities that can even the playing field in that way? Not so much buffing bugs themselves, as making many of the differences between and Pokemon with better BST/Typings/Abilities/Moves less impactful when Bugs are up against them.

We really need a stick insect pokémon
Is there a better Bug typing than Bug/Steel? Bug/Fighting could be interesting.
bug is the worst type

Not sure how I forgot about that, but obviously I did.
Any other good type mixes we haven't seen?

A bug/dragon would be cool

Not being resisted by 7 types would be dandy.
Or maybe they're still resisted by all 7 but instead of doing 1/2 damage, its only 1.25.
It only means that Bug moves can be seen as decent coverage, as they would never be fully resisted.

I was trying to avoid changing up the type chart too much, which is what people tend to go to when buffing/nerfing types. Probably because it's a simple and universal way to change a type. Adding exclusive moves, or abilities, is less commonly suggested, despite it being a staple of Pokemon (though perhaps less so over time as things have spread). Probably due to being a much more complicated thing to work out. Maybe adding passive stuff not directly related to type match ups, like the grass powder move immunities, electric being immune to paralysis, and ghost being immune to trapping, would work. There's a number of ways to do what the other anon suggested, which is buff bug without taking away how the type tends to work (low BST, doesn't have truly nuke level moves, a bit on the poor side of typing).
It really didn't need that Fairy resist to it though, I fucking agree there. I do like that it's good against Psychic and Dark. Makes it seem like the classic "kind of shit in general but actually good against select higher tier things" option in RPS games. Giving it normal damage on fairies, maybe even a super effective (god knows it wouldn't really fuck Fairy over considering the rest of Bug's flaws) would probably be good and minimally chaotic and fit into that. I suppose the new psychic fairies like Gardevoir would suffer a bit. But...
Who cares?

Good ideas here.
I have to say I don't think they will, or should change the type chart any more. It's stupid but it's more interesting to work within a niche rather than equal everything out. Look at Amoongus, it's a grass type which is normally bad defensively but it has managed well competitively.
Better type combinations would definitely be a bonus. Bug/water and bug/fairy could be great, especially with the right BST distribution. They would have amazing ability to tank fighting and ground moves and still not have a dreaded 4x weakness.
Late evolutions are pretty important, I'd like to see one for a relatively early bug some time. Niche moves that give bugs utility in battle, not just power, would be the best way IMO.
Maybe some kind of special substitute for "swarm" themed bugs, or some moves that guarantee hitting multiple times for breaking subs. Actually a more balances version of parental bond would be great for mons with two stingers/horns.

It might be interesting to see an early route bug with a split evolutionary line purely based on level.
You can let it evolve from the cocoon form to the third stage at the normal level 10, or you can hold out for a long time to get a more powerful evolution at the cost of having a bit of dead weight until then. Maybe to around the mid thirties, which is pretty average, or even to the forties, to make it extra bullshit. It'd be a relatively simple evolutionary mechanic, thematically a bit like not evolving to learn moves earlier, and allows for a different final stage without all the usual nonsense split lines require.
I've loved Bug pokemon for a long time. Gen five had so many cute bugs it quickly became my fav gen. Scolipede is by far my favourite mon, Joltik being close behind. Dwebble is something I really want a plushie for.
