Gen 1 is so fucking generic that I have no idea how anyone could still put it at the top. Nostalgia is the only explanation I can come up with.
I mean, I get it, you remember your childhood escapism pretty fondly. But just look at them. Be honest. Most of its designs are lackluster, uninteresting, or, in a few circumstances, just plain bad.
It's not my least favorite gen, but the best? Not by a long shot. Take off those rose-colored glasses.

Gen three introduced a ton of really cool pokemon, like Aggron, Milotic, Metagross, and Tropius, I could go on, really I could. I have a hard time coming up with a gen 3 pokemon I didn't like. Well, there's Spinda I guess. But everything else is at least good, if not great.
Gen 1 had that classic design, and is chock-full of excellent pokemon designs. Still, IMO it has less awesome per pound than gen 3 has stuffed into it. Still, top shelf stuff.
Gen 4 has some fantastic pokemon, like Garchomp, Drapion, Croagunk, and the three cover legendaries, but it also has a few that I am less ecstatic about. Most of them aren't bad, per say, but there are some underwhelming entries.
Gen 5 had some polarizing designs. It produced a mixture of amazing and shit designs unlike any other gen. While more pokemon I dislike were introduced here than in any other gen, it gets credit for the good ones and the sheer testicular power it takes to sign off on such a list.
Gen 6 had a lot of meh, make no mistake. In some places, it seemed like they have a checklist of animals they haven't used yet that they were going down. With that said, there are a few stellar designs, like Tyrantrum and Pangoro that save this gen from purgatory.
Gen 2: Ugh. Not only do most of these guys look like shit, a lot of them ARE shit. Tyranitar is the beginning and the end of their amazing designs. Skarmory, Feraligatr, and Xatu make up the good. Everything else is meh or worse.

Yes. In my opinion gen 3 ruined pokémon for ever. It was tainted by the greed hands ot TPCI.
Also it deleted mechanics from gen II and started the trend of deleting mechanics every gen. Also it was slow as fuck and every turn took for ever. Pokémon designs stopped looking like pokémon.

You don't have to be a genwunner to notice gen 1 introduced the highest amount of quality designs and relatively few weak designs. Gen 6 has pretty much no bad designs if we take Megas out of equation, but less than 80 Pokemon sucks.

I always had a thing for gen 2 pokemon design-wise. Too bad most of them are unusable in-game.

I like pokemon from every gen, but the overall consistency varies greatly. Hoenn's very well-rounded, Sinnoh and Unova have a lot of highs but extreme lows. Johto and Kanto aren't bad, but mostly uninteresting. Kalos is blegh.
