Can you make 3D models? If so, go 3D. It's not that hard, and working in 3D is super easy in Unity.
If you can't and/or don't want to learn to model, just do it the old way, but Unity might not be the best idea for that. If you're going full 2D, Unity has a lot of overhead that you don't really need.
And a practical question: have you really thought about the scope of what you're trying to do here? Online multiplayer is pretty hard to implement, even in Unity, and making it Massively Multiplayer is even worse. Do you have any networking experience? If you don't, you might want to think long and hard about whether this is the project you want to pursue.
