Gen 4 had the worst mid stages, but the best final stages. Gen 1 is the reverse in my opinion with some god tier mid stages and weak designs for the final evolutions imo.

and i dont understand why considering they cover most part of the run. You either get your not so good looking mid evo after the first gym or suck it up and evolve it later at, like, level 30

Bayleef and Croconaw are pretty good. Quilava, not as much.
Grovyle and Marshtomp are okay. I keep thinking Combusken is okay too but then the phallic imagery is too much to bear. I blame you people.
Gen IV is where I feel middle evos start to fall apart. Monferno and Prinplup are fucking ass. They didn't even try. Grotle is okay, just barely.
Then Gen V comes. Good lord. Dewott is fucking abysmal, perhaps the worst one. Followed by Pignite and Servine, both bad as well.
And now Gen VI. Braixen was a goddamn miracle and is perhaps queen of all middle evos, not even a furfag I'm just straight up saying the truth. Frogadier is meh and Quilladin... Okay sorry I take back what I said about Dewott earlier. Quilladin is THE worst middle evo like fucking christ what a stomache-churning ABOMINATION, WHAT WERE THEY THINKING???
I'm really scared for Gen VII middle starters now. Please don't continue this downward trend. Please don't fuck it up. I don't want to spend a good chunk of the main campaign toting a bland minimum effort abortion.

A lot of it has to do with marketing.
First stage starters are always generally cute and super marketable, also very important in promoting upcoming games.
Final stage starters get promotion later on in a generation's lifespan and get forced down your throat.
Middle evos are just a stepping stone. An arbitrary obligatory span of time for grinding. Save for an odd anime episode feature its just... There. And then its no wonder they always look so poor.
