Water has the fewest weaknesses of all the starter types, it usually gives you an advantage in at least one of the early gyms, and also usually benefits from one of the water-type HMs. Surf and Waterfall are pretty strong on a max spatk mon and max atk mon respectively.

When I was young I was full grass fag for the first three generations. Now that I took a ten year break till right before X/Y came out I'm kind of shifted to whatever appeals to me the most from each generation.
